Cleaning your car is about more than appearance; it also helps maintain your investment and protect its surfaces. However, when it comes to car care, there are a plethora of "driveway wisdoms" that can actually do more harm than good. To be effective, deep cleaning a car is not simply a car wash; it takes a thorough process with the right practices and products.

Here are five of the most common myths about deep cleaning cars to help avoid expensive mishaps and keep your car looking phenomenal.

Myth #1: Dish Soap is a Great, Cheap Car Wash Soap

Myth: It makes lots of suds and breaks up grease on dishes, so it should be great for cars, right?

Reality: This is one of the most harmful myths. Dish soap is a degreaser formulated to degrease everything off a surface, including the grease and oil. When you use it on your car, it will strip off any protective layering which could be; wax, sealants, or even the top layer of the car's coating. Any thin film that protects your paintwork will be removed and will leave your paint vulnerable to UV rays, acid rain, and dried out plastic and rubber trim which will render it faded and will crack.

Right Way: Use a dedicated pH neutral car meeting, that is designed for vehicles, to lift dirt and grime and wash your car without stripping any of the protective layers off your vehicle.

Myth #2: A Quick Hose-Down is a "Good Enough" Car Wash

The Myth: If I rinse my car with a powerful spray of water, I am removing the dirt.

The Reality: A quick rinse will only remove loose dust and dirt. It will not remove bonded contaminants such as road film, tar, bird droppings or bug splatter. That sort of grime is only released from the surface with safe agitation with a wash mitt and proper soap. Water blasting it will likely not be effective, and then scrubbing without proper lubrication will scratch your paint.

The Way: The proper way to wash a car is by hand using the two-bucket method (one bucket full of soapy water, the other bucket for rinsing your wash mitt). This is the only safe way to ensure removal of all contaminants.

Myth #3: Automatic Car Washes are Safe and Convenient

The Myth: It's a professional establishment so it must be the best and safest way to get a clean car, quickly.

The Reality: In reality, while they may be convenient, a significant number of automatic car washes are the worst thing you can do for your paint. Often using giant spinning brushes, these washes are abrasive and can be loaded with grit, dirt and sand from many hundreds of other vehicles coming before yours. This is a primary cause of swirl marks (fine web-like scratches) which is especially noticeable in direct sunlight. Furthermore, most automatic washes use harsh and/or acidic chemicals and recycled water, all of which are tough on your paint and any coating you may have already in place.

The Right Way: A touchless automatic wash is a better option, but nothing beats a professional hand wash detail service for a truly safe and thorough clean.

Myth #4: A Car Coating Means You Never Have to Wash Your Car

The Myth: I have a ceramic car coating, so my car will stay clean forever.

The Reality: A ceramic coating is not a force field. It's a super-durable sacrificial layer of protection that is easier to clean and highly resistant to chemicals and UV rays. But, it still gets dirty! Dirt, dust, and grime will accumulate on the surface, and left unwashed, that contamination will clog the coating, covering up its gloss and hydrophobic (water-beading) effect.

The Right Way: Regular, proper washing is the only way to ensure your coating continues to perform and look the same. The benefit of a ceramic coating is that it will help to make the dirt slide off much more easily, so washing will be faster and more effective.

Myth #5: Interior Deep Cleaning is Just a Thorough Vacuum

The Myth: When I vacuum carpets and wipe the dash, I'm " deep cleaning " my interior.

The Reality: That's just a quick cleaning, not a deep cleaning. A deep cleaning on the interior of your vehicle gets rid of the dirt you can't see. There are several deep cleaning services that include: hot water extraction for seats and carpets to extract deep dirt, oils, and stains, steam cleaning to sanitize vents and cup holders and high-touch areas, leather cleaning and conditioning that prevents cracking and fading, and UV protectant to [apply] to the dash and plastic trim to prevent UV exposure.

The Right Way: The right way to truly achieve a hygienic and restored vehicle interior is to invest in a professional car wash with specialized interior detailing equipment. This refreshes your vehicle's interior for a more healthier and pleasant place.
